A Day in the Life of a Weaver…

With everything going on in the world today, you know how good it feels to shut off the news, slide into your studio, and set up shop at your loom.

And similar to any fancy dinner spread that you’ve ever planned, cooked, or enjoyed…

This, too, comes with its fair share of prep work.

Things like...

  • Choosing your colors…
  • Making sure you have enough yarn...
  • Picking a draft...
  • Figuring out the right sett...
  • Calculating how much warp and weft you need...

And once you’ve made these important decisions -
Next on the prep list is to warp your loom...

1. Winding...

2. Beaming…

3. Threading…

4. Sleying…

5. Tying on...

And after a few long days and many cups of coffee...
You’re so delighted that it’s finally time to throw the shuttle!

Thread by thread, your beautiful creation takes form...

The rich colors dancing across your warp…
The rhythmic sounds emerging from your loom…
The joy of losing yourself inside your favorite craft…
.

And it’s at THIS VERY MOMENT

That weavers often have a

COLOR CONFIDENCE CRISIS #1: When disaster strikes

This happens when your work has woven into a disheartening, muddy mess.

It’s when you realize your colors aren’t looking AT ALL like they did on the cone.

While they were so distinct and beautiful at one point…

You now look down to see a mixed mess of yarn and have no idea What. Went. Wrong.

“How did this happen?!”

“Why do my pretty colors look brown?!”

“Where did my stripes go?!”

…[and other colorful questions depending on who is or isn’t around]

DISAPPOINTED. TIME WASTED. MONEY WASTED. EMOTIONALLY DRAINED. FRUSTRATED.

That’s because color mistakes are an expensive fix.

And if you’ve ever found yourself face-to-face with that first universal color-defining experience, then you may not be a stranger to the second one, either -

COLOR CONFIDENCE CRISIS #2:

The fear of trying new and unknown colors

This happens when you realize you’re sticking to a narrow range of “safe” colors so you never have to experience defining moment #1 ever again.

You fall back on the “tried and true” colors from kits or published “recipes.”

Perhaps you only work with neutral or tame colors, and you feel nervous picking colors when you don’t truly know their outcome.

On one hand, it helps spare you from the foggy pit of color uncertainty....

But, on the other - it often leaves you feeling like your creativity is stifled, your work is dull, or you’ve been placed into a “box” that has no personality, imagination, or expression.

>>> B-o-o-o-o-ring.

DID YOU KNOW?

It often comes down to 5 core reasons that a once-hopeful project  wove up into lackluster colors.

How do I know that? Do I possess some kind of magical superpower?

Nope. The fact of the matter is that weaving with color doesn’t have any shrouded secrecy. I don’t have a magic pill that gives me this knowledge.

Instead, I’ve spent years scientifically testing (like a mad scientist in a lab - literally) how colors interact with one another. I’ve then unrolled these proven techniques, simplified the answers, and banked years of experience from thousands of students to perfect these color tendencies.

And Here's Why Most Color Mistakes Happen:

Reason 1:

Some weavers don’t understand that value is the most critical aspect of color because much of our visual system only perceives black and white.

Reason 2:

Some weavers don’t realize that your choice of draft often determines whether you wind up with bright or muddy colors.

Reason 3:

Some weavers pick the wrong scale for their woven pattern and also view it at the wrong scale when designing.

Reason 4:

Some weavers, not understanding color mixing, pick colors that blend into dull colors rather than bright ones.

Reason 5:

Some weavers become frozen in the face of color, thus inhibiting them from receiving any and all color help.

HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS -

NOW YOU KNOW. AND THAT’S HALF THE BATTLE.

And having these new insights might stir up the following questions -

What if you could tackle design mistakes objectively - with analysis, precision, and facts?

What if you didn’t have to redo, start again, or second-guess your actions?

What if there were a systematic, actionable way to create clear, crisp patterns and bold, beautiful colors the way you envisioned WITHOUT any errors?

What if you knew how to make the correct moves and changes beforehand, so you never had to deal with a color disaster in the first place?

And it all boils down to this one idea...

What if you could conquer color and design beautiful handwoven projects that others admire?

Because let me confide something in you -

Color mistakes aren’t your fault.

And weaving colors that turn out exactly as you hoped is not some mystical concept, either.

The only reason your color might not turn out is because you simply haven’t been taught the science and methodology behind the concept of color.

Because let’s face it - after all that work you’ve put in…

And your love for the craft...

… You deserve to sit back at your final product, sip tea on your couch, and revel in how beautifully your project turned out.

It’s time to stop sitting in the dark wondering whether one color will work with another or not.

It’s time to stop trial-and-erroring your way through project flops and setbacks.

And it’s time to stop feeling isolated or anxious whenever you weave.

And here’s how I can help you with just that...

Rolling out the red carpet on…

Deb Sharpee

Here’s how you’ll become

the most envied artist

in your weaving circle…

By the end of this program,
You will be able to:

Create beautiful projects that turn out exactly the way you wanted them to by predicting how your colors mix BEFORE they go onto the loom

Feel So. Much. More. Confidence every time you begin a new project, because you understand precisely how all your colors and designs will unfold

Get more spark out of every project because you can easily differentiate how colors interact in a weave structure

Proudly share your passion projects (as gifts, on display at your home, or for monetary value) because the effort you put in is finally rewarded with beauty

Control how much your colors mix and keep an overly assertive color from dominating while using warm or cool colors to change the mood of a piece

Draw attention to where you want it - and not where you don’t. You’ll be able to create an eye-grabbing design or keep it elegantly understated, by choosing the right color palette

Understand and implement the secrets to STRIPES and arm yourself with the mastery of managing difficult colors

Here’s your roadmap to becoming a confident color champion...

WEEK 1
Designing
Beautiful Fabric

You’ll walk away knowing what visual factors go into designing handwoven fabric, so you can design fabric that looks cheerful, zingy, meditative, subtle, peppy (and ANY other mood you want!). You’ll know exactly how to nail the look and feel of a project, and you’ll understand your cloth's "signature style,” which contributes to the creation of a distinctive mood.

WEEK 2
Palettes with Pizzazz

You'll learn how to select a color palette that allows you to make your beautiful designs a reality. You'll get complete clarity on how to create the mood of a fabric using contrast, value, hue, and saturation - using warm and cool colors, neutrals and brights. You’ll also master choosing colors that stay bright when mixed.

WEEK 3
Lay It Out

You'll analyze how to sketch out a design and will uncover how to design a piece that looks fantastic from a distance before moving on to the fine details. You’ll learn about rhythm, balance, unity, and contrast - principles that will help you make fabulous projects no matter what you’re weaving.

WEEK 4
Color Mixing Mojo

You'll close the books on week four knowing exactly how color mixing works in weaving! Read: NO MORE MUDDY COLORS! You'll be armed with how to predict exactly what colors result when you mix two colors together. (Do you know what you get if you mix orange and purple? You will!) And you’ll discover how to make your colors POP by choosing their neighboring colors correctly.

WEEK 5
Design With Drafts

You’ll deep dive into choosing a draft that combines colors just as you'd like. You'll also understand how the woven pattern in the draft contributes to the signature style of your fabric and know how to choose the right patterning - bold or subtle, simple or complex - for the mood you want to create.

WEEK 6
Sophisticated Stripes

You'll “up” your color confidence by learning the finer points of weaving with stripes. You'll learn to coordinate color changes with the patterning in your draft to create beautiful motifs, and you’ll unpack how to use color contrast to put focus where you want it (and not where you don't). You'll finish up week six by learning the secret of managing difficult colors using stripe width for those hard-to-use colors.

BONUS WEEKS 7-8
Weaving Your Project

Weave the project you've designed, with support from Tien! There will be no new lessons during these weeks but you will get two Q&A sessions each week to answer your design and weaving questions.

Content is delivered each week in three different ways:

Available-Anytime Lessons

Prerecorded text and video lessons that break down heavy topics into easy-to-understand trainings. These laser-focused lessons are short and focused (because I don’t believe in long theoretical lectures that put people to sleep!) I believe in concise foundational training that sparks consistent aha! moments right from the intro.

Interactive Play Time

Following each lesson, you’ll be guided through easy, fun online exercises that are completely self paced, and available for you to complete whenever you’d like. Each exercise is organized in a fun and interactive way to help you fully understand and implement what you learned.

DOUBLE Weekly Coaching Sessions

You will receive THREE hours of LIVE support every single week throughout the duration of this course! That means twice a week, we will meet as a group for 90 minutes and you’ll receive further training on that week's lesson, along with live design critique and live Q&A sessions to ensure all your design questions and issues are answered. This live component and ability to receive in-the-moment-support is truly what makes this course like nothing else available today. Sessions will all be recorded, and you will have access for life!

Have you ever learned a foreign language well enough to start thinking in that language? Having taken one of Tien's classes, I am now thinking in color. Best class to help my weaving I have ever taken.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST ME?

Hi there, I’m Tien Chiu 🙂

And the moment I solved my own color frustrations  (which took me years to finesse) was the moment it became my mission  to share my findings with other technically-driven, knowledge-hungry weavers.

And even after hitting personal milestones such as  authoring a book, seeing my work on the cover of Handwoven, and having my work collected by textile museums...

My biggest accomplishment is helping weavers like you  have a dramatically improved experience every single time you wind your warp.

Thank you for allowing me into your weaving world, I'm so excited to see what you create!

Since learning from Tien, I can now search through my stash of colors, understand which ones work well together, and create designs I previously struggled to capture. She is a gifted and personable teacher - her classes have helped me design and create projects that I have never been more excited about and look forward to continuing the discovery.

Who Is This Course Best-suited For?

It's for you if...

  • You’re ready to WOW people with remarkable designs
  • You feel comfortable designing your own projects on the physical side but need help with the visual & aesthetics side of the things
  • You want an easy-to-understand, systematic, logical approach to using color
  • You’re looking to explode your color and design skills

It’s not for you if…

  • You’re a beginning weaver who is still learning the mechanics of weaving (we’re cheering you on and have other resources that will be ideal for you!)
  • You weave primarily on rigid heddle looms (we LOVE rigid heddle weavers but you’ll need a loom with 4 or more shafts to get the most out of this class)

The “Color Confident” Guarantee

I’m a weaver, just like you.

And I understand the risk of investing in a digital product when you can’t see or touch it.

I’m extremely proud of the products I create, and I know anyone who buys them and soaks up the training, strategy, and resources will be on their way to a confident colorista with “Make Your Colors Sing!”

That’s why I’m offering a 30-day money-back guarantee.

If, after the first 30 days of the class, you haven’t found the program worth your investment, you can ask for a refund, and I’ll send your full money back. No questions asked.

It is super important to me that my students are happy with the course - so if you’re not happy, I’m not happy. That’s my promise to you.

You may have a few questions on your mind.
Let me tackle them...

When does the course begin?

The class starts on January 15th, 2021 (and if you can’t make it to any live webinars, remember that it’s all recorded and you’ll have lifetime access)! You’ll also get welcomed into your course dashboard and the private Facebook group, immediately upon purchase.

How much weaving experience do I need to take this course?

This course is primarily about design, so you'll do best if you're an advanced beginner to intermediate weaver (or beyond). At minimum, you should feel very comfortable warping a loom and weaving a project from written instructions, and you'll get more out of the class if you're already choosing your own drafts and yarns for projects rather than depending on project recipes.

Do I have to attend the course at a particular time?

Not at all. This program was created with you in mind - the weaver who wants to watch on their own time, hit pause, re-watch, take a break, and then come back for more! There is no set schedule for advancing through this course - plus, you’ll have all the material for life!

Do I get access to your brain, Tien?

YES, YOU DO! You will have 24 hours of LIVE support from me as you work through this course. You’ll receive 90-minutes each of a demo and Q&A session every single week, where I’ll expand on the weekly training and offer solutions to student problems. Plus, I'll be answering many questions in the discussion tabs of the course and in the Facebook group.

What kind of loom do I need to take the class? Can I do it on a rigid heddle loom?

This class is meant for weavers using shaft looms with 4 or more shafts. (While we LOVE rigid heddle loom weavers, the content is not designed for rigid heddle looms.)

This course is delivered online. What if I’m not technically inclined?

This online program has been meticulously organized to help serve everyone - even for those who aren't overly tech-savvy. (One of the biggest differentiators that I continually hear about my courses is how well organized and easy to navigate they are!)

What if I don’t have Facebook?!

No problem - you don’t need to be on Facebook at all! All the vital course content, the live demos, and the Q&A’s are in your dashboard and NOT in Facebook - so you won’t miss a beat with any of the teachings. You can also share your work and ask questions inside the course dashboard. You'll get every bit of course content - the only thing you'll miss out on is the student community.

Do I have to weave a project to take this course?

Not unless you want to! We’ll be weaving samples and designing a project in this course, but the design part is what’s important, not the weaving - and you can do the design part entirely online without weaving a thing. So if your loom’s tied up or you don’t have time to weave, no worries! You don’t have to weave anything to get 90+% of the benefit from the class..

How long do I have access to this course?

You have unlimited access! As long as my school is open - and I plan to teach for decades yet - you’ll have access to the course in your student dashboard. If I close my school, you’ll have 90 days to download all the course materials to keep. (The Color Editor used in the course belongs to Handweaving.net, though, and is not included in the download.)

And if I can make one thing clear to you
about “Make Your Colors Sing”...

It’s how HIGHLY interactive and informative this program is - there’s absolutely nothing else like it online. Students have said, “Tien continuously explodes my mind with knowledge” - all for good reason.

And if you’re willing to invest in this concentrated training and group coaching to FULLY conquer your hesitations around color… I promise to reward you with the most powerful, systematic approach that will blow every other training you’ve ever had out of the waters. You have my word that this design course will help you understand color in a new and simple light, easier than you ever thought was possible.

That means you’ll receive…

WEEK 1: Designing Beautiful Fabric
WEEK 2: Palettes with Pizzazz
WEEK 3: Lay It Out
WEEK 4: Color Mixing Mojo
WEEK 5: Design with Drafts
WEEK 6: Sophisticated Stripes
BONUS! WEEKS 7-8: Weaving Your Project
