The ambiance of a piece depends on the characteristics of its dominant colors – primarily value, but also on their hues. In this exercise, you’ll explore the effects of different color palette choices.

The directions will give you some initial ideas for exploration, but feel free to go further: pick different color combinations, upload photos of your stash yarns to play with, etc.

Part 1: Value

  1. Choose two dark colors for color #1 and color #2. Take a screenshot.
What mood does the draft convey?
  2. Pick a medium value of the same hues for color #1 and color #2. (In other words, don’t change the hue of the colors you just used, just move further out from the center.) Take a screenshot.
  3. Lighten the values to a pastel shade. Take a screenshot.
  4. Compare all three screenshots.
How does the feel of the three drafts differ?

Part 2: Hue/Saturation

  1. Select two highly saturated warm colors for color #1 and color #2. (Warm colors are colors in the red-orange, orange, yellow, yellow-green color families.) Take a screenshot.
  2. Pick less saturated (duller) versions of the same hues. Take a screenshot.
  3. Pick two cool colors. (Cool colors are colors in the blue-green, blue, blue-purple, purple, and red-purple color families.) Take a screenshot.
  4. Pick less saturated (duller) versions of the same hues. Take a screenshot.
  5. Compare all four screenshots. How do the warm color drafts feel? How do the cool color drafts feel? How much difference in strength does saturation make to the ambiance?
